3 Basics of Maintaining a Pool

Step 1: Regular Skimming and Cleaning

The first step to maintaining a clean pool is regular skimming and cleaning. Skimming the water surface with a net helps remove leaves, debris, and insects. Remove debris and leaves from the skimmer baskets - and more regularly when leaves drop in the fall.

Then, use a pool brush to scrub the walls and floor focusing on areas prone to algae growth, such as corners and steps. Vacuum the pool regularly to remove any remaining debris; though some homeowners opt to utilize a automatic cleaner.

Step 2: Proper Chemical Balancing

Maintaining proper chemical balance is sometimes the most difficult process of keeping a clear pool - seek professional guidance to evaluate and distribute chemicals. The key chemical levels to monitor and adjust are pH, chlorine, and alkalinity.

  • pH Level: Keep the pH level between 7.4 and 7.6, which is slightly above neutral. This range ensures optimal effectiveness of chlorine and prevents scaling or corrosion of pool surfaces.
  • Chlorine Level: Maintain an appropriate chlorine level to disinfect the water and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and algae. The recommended range is between 1 and 3 parts per million (ppm).
  • Alkalinity Level: Alkalinity acts as a buffer, helping to stabilize the pH level. Aim for an alkalinity range of 80 to 120 ppm to prevent pH fluctuations.

Step 3: Efficient Filtration and Circulation

Your filter and pump play a crucial role in keeping your pool water clean. Your pump helps to circulate all the water in your pool through the filter which helps remove small particles, debris, and impurities from the water.

  • Run the pool pump for 8 to 12 hours a day (during the heat of the day during summer months)
  • Backwash your  D.E. filter every 4-6 weeks or what is recommended by the manufacturer
  • Breakdown, inspect & clean your D.E. filter components every 3 months or as recommended by the manufacturor.
  • There are 3 main types of  filtration systems: Sand filter, D.E. Filter, & Cartridge filter. Please read your manufacturer instructions and consult an expert for personalized advice
  • Check the pump and skimmer baskets frequently and remove any debris that may impede the flow of water.

Though there are more details of how each of these components plays a role in keeping a clean and clear pool, this can help you understand the fundamentals of how the components work together.

The environment like the surrounding plants, climate, and pool usage are all factors that should be considered when maintaining your pool. If you are looking for expert advice, even virtually, you can schedule a pool school to learn from an expert how to maintain your pool.
