Look on the Brightside: LED Lighting for Your Pool

Last night my wife and I sat down outside and the Pool lights came on. Not sure if other homeowners use their lights as a night light, but we like to set ours from 6pm-11pm. It got me wondering if other homeowners are curious about the utility difference between Incandescent lighting and LED lighting.

Similar to the DOE rule for variable-speed pool and spa pumps, there are new performance-oriented regulations. It applies to all lamps that emit between 310 and 3,300 lumens. If a light falls under that category, it must emit at least 45 lumens per watt.

Here is a quick example. We will compare a standard incandescent pool and spa light which would draw 750 watts per hour = 3.75 KWH per evening, making the annual cost standard 1369 KWH. Based on $0.14 cents per KWH for standard lighting, total annual cost would be $191.66.

While a Jandy LED color Changing Pool light and Spa light would draw 86 watts per hour = 0.43 KWH per Evening, making the annual cost standard 157 KWH.LED would cost $21.98 approximately $169 of power savings over the year!

Pros of LED Pool Lighting

  1. Safety First: 12V vs. 120V: LEDs come in 12-volt (low voltage) and 120-volt (standard voltage) options. 12-volt systems are safer, reducing the risk of electrical shock. So, you can swim worry-free.
  2. Save on Energy and Costs: LEDs use a lot less electricity than traditional incandescent or halogen pool lights. This means lower energy bills and more money in your pocket. Plus, they last longer, so you’ll spend less on replacements.
  3. Long-Lasting Durability: LEDs can last up to 25,000 hours or more, far outlasting incandescent and halogen bulbs. They’re tough enough to handle the pool’s chemicals, so they won’t need frequent changes or maintenance.
  4. Amazing Aesthetics: LEDs offer a rainbow of colors and brightness levels. You can set the mood for a party or a relaxing evening swim with just a flick of a switch, unlike incandescent and halogen lights which have limited color options.
  5. Eco-Friendly: Using less power and lasting longer means LEDs are better for the planet. Fewer replacements mean less waste, too.

Cons of LED Pool Lighting

  1. Higher Upfront Cost: LEDs cost more upfront than traditional lights. But with all the savings on energy and maintenance, they pay for themselves over time.
  2. Installation Needs: Switching to LED, especially to a 12-volt system, can be tricky. You’ll need a pro to install them correctly and meet local codes. (Luckily you have a fully electrically licensed expert from Aqua+Medic to call 😉 )
  3. Compatibility: Make sure your new LEDs work with your current pool setup to avoid any hassle during installation.

If your pool light is out, it seems a no-brainer to update to LED lighting for the cost savings of not only the light lasting longer, but with the energy savings as well. By upgrading to LEDs, you’re not just following the law—you’re also getting safer, more efficient, and more stunning pool lighting. Ready to light up your nights? 🌟🏊‍♂️
